Fire Protection

Unfortunately thatch does burn but some precautions can be taken.

Research suggests that in recent years log burners combined with poor chimneys seem to have been causing problems.

If you have a log burner follow some simple rules

Only have a stove fitted by a Heatas registered firm.

Make sure you have an insulated liner not a flexible boiler liner.

Have the stove inspected by a heatas registered firm if unsure.

Brush the flue at least once a season preferably more.

Only burn dry wood or fuel.

Check local building regs for the height of chimney above thatch.

-----------------------------------------

Avoid fires in the garden if possible.

Have the electrical system checked.

There are some physical barriers available which can be fixed between the thatch and the building most new properties install the Dorset System this involves fixing a fire proof board to the rafters counter battening then normal battening. For older properties where the roof is not level flexible barriers are available. The systems do not stop the thatch burning but aim to place a barrier between the building and the thatch giving time for actions to be taken.

There are heat detection schemes available which are installed in the loft area on or near the chimney. Contact information available.
