Obtain a full specification for work before the job begins, this should include the appropriate material and the thickness it will be thatched to. Below are nationally recognised optimum depths for thatch. Materials thatched correctly to these specifications will ensure maximum lifespan.
Water Reed:
Depth of coat fixed directly to timberwork:................12"-14".
Depth of coat fixed over existing layer of thatch:..........8"-10".
Long Straw:
Depth of coat fixed directly to timberwork:........................14".
Depth of coat fixed over existing layer of thatch:..........10"-12".
